Fluticasone is a nasal spray that belongs to a group of drugs known as corticosteroids. This nasal spray is used to treat certain growths in the nose and at the same time help reduce nasal swelling or inflammation.
Flonase is the brand name for Fluticasone which doctors prescribe to treat symptoms of certain allergies. This nasal spray is often used to reduce inflammation in the nasal passages, skin, and lungs. Sometimes, Fluticasone is also given orally to treat severe conditions.
How to use Fluticasone nasal spray?
Before anything else, you are required to read and follow the instructions that are written on the leaflet.
Since this nasal spray is often prescribed, you will have to use the spray as instructed by your doctor. You are not allowed to spray the substance in your eyes and in your mouth. Since for oral medication, Fluticasone may also be taken by mouth but that will have to be prescribed as well by your doctor.
Often times, this spray is advised to be used twice a day. Remember to shake the spray well after removing the cap.
Afterwards, you have to tilt your head slightly forward and then slowly insert the applicator in the nostril. Insert the mouthpiece into your mouth as you hardly release air to the mouthpiece. Keep in mind to not breathe or blow into your nostril while you are still using the spray. After doing so, do the same on the other nostril.
The dosage however, will depend on your medical condition and on how your body reacted to the drug. It is also important to know that you are not allowed to increase dosage without consulting your doctor about it.
The effectivity of this drug may not work right away so you have to be patient and wait for the medication to kick in.
Side Effects of Fluticasone
Some individuals reported negative side effects after using this drug. Some of the symptoms may include the following:
- Runny Nose
- Blood in the mucus
- Stomach pain
- Irritation in the nose
- Skin rash
- Numbness of the fingers
Since our body reacts differently on the medication, make sure to call the doctor if you are experiencing any of the following:
- Flu-like symptoms
- Sore throat
- Vision problems
- Muscle weakness
- Irregular menstrual cycle
- Injury in the nose
- White patches in the nose or throat
- Worsen acnes
- Difficulty breathing
- Extreme tiredness
- Enlarged face and neck
Usually these severe symptoms only take place if the corticosteroid given has interacted with the bloodstream. Even if this happens rarely, it is a must that you see your doctor if any of these mentioned serious symptoms take place.
Just like other drugs, Fluticasone may also interact with other medications. Be it any kind of medications; recreational medicine, over-the-counter drugs, or herbs, you have to let your doctor know about the medications you’re taking most especially if you’re taking any of the following:
- Drugs for HIV
- Antifungal medications
- Oral steroids
- Asthma medications
- Heart medications
Before taking the drug, you also have to inform your doctor if you have any allergic reactions to medications because Fluticasone may also contain inactive ingredients that can lead to some allergic reactions.
Family history should also be consulted to the doctor most especially if we’re talking about eye conditions here or any recent nose infections.
It is also important to keep in mind that while under this medication, you should avoid contact with people who have infections that may spread or affect others. Immediately report to your doctor if you have been exposed to any situation.
For pregnant or lactating women, it is also necessary to discuss the situation with your doctor to avoid side effects on the growing baby or child.
Aside from the doctor’s prescription, you are not allowed to increase the dosage of the drug since this may lead to overdosing and could also trigger other health conditions.
Symptoms of Overdosing
- Enlarged face or neck
- Irregular menstrual cycle
- Loss of appetite
- Muscle weakness
- Extreme fatigue
- Skin darkening
- Fainting or dizziness
- Easy bruising
- Weight Loss
If some of these symptoms take place, immediately call the nearest poison control center and make sure you tell your doctor about it.
Missed Dose of Fluticasone
As mentioned above, this medication might work right away. You will still have to use this drug for a few more days before you notice its effectiveness.
However, there may be instances wherein you would overlook or forget about your medication schedule. If by chance you miss a dose of the drug, forget about it and continue with your next dose on the given time. Do not make up for the missed dose anymore.
Furthermore, it would be best to not forget about your regular usage or consumption so you can fully experience the benefits of Fluticasone. As advised, you follow the doctor’s recommendations on how long you will be sing this drug.
